Sheriff - "Sheriff"
[Hapna, www.hapna.com]

When you hear melancholy music, you don’t know whether the artist in question is producing it on purpose [to put you into a blue mood], or whether they were depressed to start with, and are creating this music to share with other listeners. The Swedish duo Sheriff is probably doing this for both reasons. Sweden is located on the Arctic Circle [lack of sun could lead to depression], and this duo only wants to let the world know how morose it is to live in a country that close situated to the pole. Guitarist, pianist and vocalist Magnus Grasberg along with percussionist Henrico Olsson produce sounds that hang there, far up in the air. There is no rush on this record, and certainly, no sense of urgency. These are mostly instrumental pieces. Imagine, if you will, what Red House Painters would sound like, if you were to slow down their music, and if the vocalist was even less active. Slow percussive hushed sounds are mixed in with delicate and pure strokes of the piano. When guitar appears, it is only there to enhance the ever-present mood of melancholy and sadness. In all honesty, though Sheriff is highly accessible, this music is not for everyone. If you are a person full of vigour, I would recommend you stay far away from Sheriff. It would only drag you down. For the rest of you, Sheriff is a cure for a cold. They are an aspirin for your headache. This is what stillness sounds like.
