El-P - "High Water"
[Thirsty Ear, www.thirstyear.com]

When a rapper assumes the role of a composer within a jazz context, thing are bound to get interesting. "High Water", El-P's debut for the Blue Series is a rather odd-ball and at the same time very unique piece of work. Basically, he has assembled the Blue Series Continuum [musicians such as Matthew Shipp, Roy Campbell, William Parker Steve Swell, Daniel Carter and Guillermo E. Brown] and composed music for them to play. The record in its entirety has a very melancholy atmosphere to it. In fact, I can't remember the last time I was this touched by a record that is this sad. I don't know whether El-P is overtly depressed, but I get this feeling that there is no sunshine in his life. The tracks progress rather slowly, almost like any person trying to drag themselves out of bed after a night at a party. You know you have to get up for work, but you want to sleep in just a few minutes longer. "Sunrise Over Bklyn" is a prime example. Shipp's piano just hangs there up in the air without much purpose, without a destination, while Guillermo E. Brown pounds a mean repetitive beat on his percussion. It's really a stark piece, and getting through its entire 10 minute length can pose a bit of a challenge. There is so much tension and lethargy all rolled up into one that one wonders what sorts of conditions these musicians were working under. [To get the answer to that question, you have to watch the documentary that is enclosed on this CD.] The remainder of the CD is filled with equally tense, repetitive and minimal pieces. Some of them are so repetitive that you can just envision someone rapping right on top of them. El-P's samples are very minimal throughout, which means that the listener concentrates purely on the sombre music at hand. "High Water" is two things then. It can either be intense mood music for a cloudy day, or rap for those that hate the vocals.
