Elliott Sharp / Melvin Gibbs / Lance Carter - "Raw Meet"
[Intakt, www.intaktrec.ch]

This isn't the first time [nor the last, I hope] that the Swiss record label, Intakt venture into the world of rock. After an absence of a few years, Elliott Sharp returns with a trio that honestly, gets equal billing on all counts. Bassist Melvin Gibbs and drummer Lance Carter are not mere supporting pawns. They are in fact full-fledges co-creators of this music. But let's be honest for one minute, this has the hand-prints of an Elliott Sharp record all over it. I lost track of Sharp's recorded output for a while, but on first listen, it's rather blatantly apparent, that he hasn't strayed very far from his Carbon output. In fact, a lot of the record has skewed guitar lines, and off-beat rhythms that break into halves. Nowhere is there a real sense of continuity. As far as Sharp is concerned, the more bizarre sounds he can produce with his guitar and delays, the more grateful his audience will be. The funk-derived bass playing of Melvin Gibbs together with solid rhythms packed in by Lance Carter give this trio a sturdy backbone to stand on. Sharp simply maneuvers his playing around these two. It's almost as if he's purposefully decided to work against his own trio. I particularly like his use of delays and feedback [as on "Sante Sangre"], when the trio slowly builds momentum for what seems like ages to arrive at a climax. His strong need for a conflict is apparent from beginning to end of this record. "Raw Meet" is indeed raw and brutal in moments. It also has the sturdiness of a real rock trio, one that is willing to experiment with their roll.
