Jah Wobble & Invaders Of The Heart - "English Roots Music", 30 Hertz
www.30hertzrecords.com

With each release Jah Wobble either amazes the listener, or simply astounds. After his adventure with Evan Parker on "Passage to Hades", he introduces us to "English Roots Music". With the help of vocalist Liz Carter and the Invaders of the Heart, he recreates his own interpretation of what "folk" music in UK sounds like. These are for the most part commonly known songs that Wobble infuses with his deep bass backbone. These are tales of sorrow, loss, love and pain. Each individual snippet represents some story with an emotional force. Liz's voice, though fairly flat at times, does reach unexpected highs. It is easy to get lost in the aura of these tales. There is much to unravel at every step of the way. Even the haunting instrumental "Strange Duet", where guitarist Chris Cookson provides a powerful feedback barrage on top of Wobble's haunting bass throbs is stunning. The nearly acapella version of "Bykerhill" [with Wobble's gentle bass lines hidden beneath] showcases Liz's vocal's best. It is here that she truly shines and is allowed to show off. The use of reverb on some tracks is done for over effect, and adds to the overall texture of this record. Long gone are the days of PIL. "English Roots Music" is highly accessible music for everyone, not just the world music fans.
