David Garland - "On The Other Side of the Window", Review / No Man's Land

"On The Other Side of the Window" is one of these recordings you want to play only when it's raining. Why? David Garland's voice is just so sad, you want to put it on when you're at you're feeling at your lowest. The record drags through the hour long song repertoire like an exhausted turtle running a never-ending race. His voice is dry, somber and most of all, atonal. David never raises his voice to utter his emotions, nor does he shout at the top of his lungs about anything that may be hurting him. All the instrumentation has been arranged [and most has been played] by him - guitars, synchs, accordion, harmonica, vibraphone, etc. He employs a lot of pre-recorded tapes - sounds of Times Square, ducks, rain, etc. Even though the vast majority of the record is quite minimal, there are passages that scream out with dense amounts of overdubs. Without a doubt, this is a very honest record. It pours with emotion in the same way that Robert Wyatt [probably the closest vocalist I can compare him to] records sweat with feelings. David Garland has recorded a true winner with "On The Other Side of the Window". The only problem is that this is not an experimental record per se, and should be heard by a wider audience. Whether this will come to pass, only remains to be seen.
