EARL HOWARD - Strong Force
[Mutable Music,

"Textbooks describe music as an interplay of scales, intervals, and proportions. But what if music were more than this? What if music was a malleable substance? What if it could pass through all the states of matter, from solid to liquid, from liquid to gas, and from gas to plasma? What shapes might it assume?" This is a direct quote from liner notes by Curtis Roads that appear on Earl Howard's "Strong Force" release. Composer and synth player, Earl Howard, is knows for doing the unexpected, but this record is really a case of the big wow, the jack-in-the-box, if you will. The actual wording "Strong Force" is a complete misnomer. The Parabola Arts Ensemble [the quintet that performs these pieces] doesn't really engage in any full-blown tornado. There are no exuberant percussion solos from Gerry Hemingway [save for a few cymbal crashes that may feel "strong" to an untrained ear]. Pianist Anthony Davis delivers only a few brief, percussive piano solos. Rather, the "Strong Force" is found in the subtleties of the delivery. For some reason, the roles of cellist Ernst Reijseger, along with harp player Anne LeBaron are kept to a bare minimum [or maybe I'm just having difficulties picking them out beneath the layers of percussion, piano and synth barrage?]. In fact, there are moments of real quiet, real ponderous beauty on this record. But at moments, I get an impression the music has somehow unglued itself and resembles a strong gale wind from the north. The case to make is Earl Howard's music mutates itself quite fluidly. From shimmering rain drop sounds, to the gale winds, to the pounding thunder-storm, the mutation is seamless. "Strong Force" is another exemplary record from a composer who should finally get his due. Is the phrase "an instant classic" too strong?
