THE NECKS - Mosquito / See Through

A disclaimer first. Though I'd heard of the Australian trio The Necks before, I'd never, until now, had the chance to hear their music. Was I even in for a shock! How do I began to describe the music on this 2 CD set? For starters, I wouldn't necessarily label it "ambient jazz", which is a term that has been stuck on this trio in the past. There are too much interesting little nuances occurring during these two hour-long tracks to fall off into deep slumber. "See Through" draws the listener in immediately with a combination of soft strokes of the piano by Chris Abrahams, along with Tony Buck's shimmering cymbal crashes. Everything is held in place by the ever gentle swaying bass pulsations of Lloyd Swanton. Then, there are sections where all you'll hear are the brush strokes on the cymbals for extended periods of time. This cycle is so repetitive and drone-like in fact, that listening to it now, I can actually imagine falling asleep as I write this. [so maybe "ambient jazz" isn't such a bad term?] "Mosquito" is no different. The one thing that grabs me more immediately on this hour-long piece is that Lloyd Swanton's bass plucking is more direct. It's almost as if he woke up from his winter slumber. If this were actually possible, I would say that "Mosquito" almost "rocks" in its used and tender way. The Necks actually establish rhythm through much of this piece.

Otherwise, the trio still draws out the piece slowly [not on purpose but by their very nature], through valleys and gentle plains. Repetition and overt minimalism are key ingredients on this recording. For a beginner to the band, this release was a shock. A pleasant one at that!
