KOCH-SCHUTZ-STUDER - Life Tied

When this Swiss trio released their debut CD "Hardcore Chambermusic" back in 1994, I figured it was going to be a one-off fling at experimentation. I thought that these three improvisers wanted to see how far they could get at testing the limits of the studio and how far they were willing to go to enhance their individual sounds, and those of the trio as a unit. Now 7 records later, "Life Tied" is released to celebrate the decade long relationship of these three outstanding Swiss improvisers. The CD itself was recorded live at various venues between 2001 and 2003. It brings back the same dense but clean intensity that was present on their debut ten years ago. Sure, they're using more electronics now. Evidence for that is the inclusion of live sound engineer Daniel Schneider. Both reed man Hans Koch and cellist Martin Schutz are now also using electronics to enhance the overall sound of their instruments. This is a trio that is well known for blending various genres into one pot. Their heavy metal side on "The whispering and hammering ritual" and the almost classical feel of "Vom verschwinden" go quite well when they're heard side by side. Though this is not a record for everyone, I can clearly understand why. Jazz fans may take offence to the electronic impurities and electronica fans may take offence to the "real" instruments that are played. I suppose the shock of their sound is not as immediate as it was a decade ago, but the trio has still a lot of life in them yet. Here's to another fruitful decade!
