IRENE SCHWEIZER / OMRI ZIEGELE - Where's Africa

Swiss pianist Irene Schweizer has been recording duo CDs for longer than I care to remember. Her new effort, "Where's Africa" is Irene's umpteenth CD featuring a well-matched duo partner. In this case, saxophonist Omri Ziegele joins Irene for an hour's worth of fun and frolic. This is the duo's adventure into some of their favourite tunes that they've played together in a live setting. Irene has matured quite well, but her playing has also "softened" to a large extend. There is a lot more lyricism, poignancy and sweetness in it than was the case even a decade ago. The choice of material on this record reflects that maturity as well. I don't know of too many improvisers that have covered Johnny Mandel's "Suicide is Painless" [also known as The Theme to MASH] or Kurt Weill's "Speak Low". Regardless, the duo has also decided to record their takes on a few Monk classics ["Ask Me Now", "Monk's Mood"], wonderful Don Cherry pieces ["Golden Heart", "Terrestrial Beings" and "Art Deco"], along with Dudu Pukwana's "The Bride". So, I guess the good news is that Irene is as sharp as ever on her choice of unique material to play. Omri, whom I don't think I've come across that often before, plays his alto fairly straight. There are no overt, full-blown solos. There are no shrieks and nothing unpleasant to the human ear. When he decides to sing on Rodgers & Heart's "Isn't It Romantic", the result is rather unemotional and flat. Nonetheless, his blowing is very well countered by Irene's lively be-bop playing, which doesn't let up for one minute. All in all, "Where's Africa" is not a grand mission statement for either of these two musicians. This is rather a light-hearted affair that will please any coffee-house jazz fan.
