GUY KLUCEVSEK - The Well-Tampered Accordion
[Winter&Winter,
www.winterandwinter.com]

When I had interviewed Guy Klucevsek a year ago, this is what he told me about playing solo accordion. "For me, solo playing, especially when I am performing my own music, is the most direct means of expression I have, almost like a painter with his brush and canvas. What I love about it is that it is so personal, that you have a one-to-one relationship with the audience, and that you become almost like a story-teller. But I also love chamber and ensemble playing, because it is an act of collaboration, which pushes you to get outside yourself." You can clearly hear that excitement and story telling factor in Guy's new solo collection "The Well-Tampered Accordion". The pieces are even more swaying and emotional then on his previous work with Phillip Johnston "Tales from the Cryptic". The record itself is divided into four parts: Four Portraits [dedications to various women], Accordion Misdemeanors [Guy's take on the multi-cultural mix in various parts of the US my personal favourite being the polka take on "Poles in Chicago"], The Well-Tampered Accordion [the main part of the body] and two Burt Bacharach covers, "One Less Bell to Answer" and "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My (Wives and Lovers) Head" [this is the light hearted portion of the record]. It's not easy to record a solo record. The artist has to commit his entire self. It's like looking at yourself in the mirror. You're either honest or your venture is doomed to fail. I'm happy to report that "The Well-Tampered Accordion" is yet another successful piece in the puzzle named Guy Klucevsek.
