VARIOUS ARTISTS - Intransitive Twenty-Three

Not all compilations are created equal. This is not a slogan; rather it's a concrete truth. These two compilations stand far and beyond anything else I'd heard recently.

The German Staubgold label has been going on strong for the last few years. "Tempo Technik Teamwork" is a review of their most ambitious releases. Disc one concentrates on the Staubgold label, while the second disc is geared more towards the experimental and more ambitious Quecksilber arm of the label. There are very enriching tunes here. One need not look any further than the shimmering beauty of Sun's "Help Yourself", the folk tinged, quiet sunlight of Wechsel Garland and World Standard's "Donde Lion Wine" or the head-on hip-hop assault of Faust vs. Dalek's "T-Electronique". Some of the highlights of the "experimental" [or the more risqué pieces, if you will] include the electric shivers of Kammerflimmer Kollektief's "Vigilia", the oblique reality of Michael J. Schumacher's "Room Piece" or the unmistakably ambient and serene "Soundchambers 1" by Ekkehard Ehlers, Joseph Suchy and Franz Hautzinger. The only weak point [if there are any here] is that some of these pieces are edits, and the listeners will not get the full picture of individual artists' work in all cases. [That's why this is called a compilation to give you only a slight taste for each of the artists' work.] Overall, this is a very rich collection, revealing both the more accessible and the daring sides of the Staubgold label.

Intransitive Recordings out of Cambridge, MA has been doodling in experimental music for the last few years. "Intransitive Twenty-Three" is a 2 CD set of some of the finest electro-acoustic, experimental and new music the label was able to get their hands on. Some of the highlights of the compilation include a wonderful, watery and almost dub-like track "Untitled # 134" from Francisco Lopez, the kettle-whistling sounds of Gal's "In Fusion", the static world of Giuseppe Ielasi's "Two Chords", and the overtly high-pitched experimentation of Le Quan Ninh's "La ville et des sinusoides a petit budget". While it's sometimes difficult to put this sort of a mix together well, this is only due to the fact each of the tracks features a completely different mood, varied sound and a unique take on the world of sound. In no sense, is this to be used as background music. [The use of headphones is well advised.] In general, this is a very solid compilation, showcasing the world of other-worldly sounds as seen through the eyes of Intransitive Recordings.
