SCOT RAY QUINTET - Active Vapor Recovery
[Cryptogramophone,

It's not often easy to find a disc for a rainy Sunday afternoon. With "Active Vapor Recovery", all of that has changed. Trombonist Scot Ray leads an electric quintet in an hour's worth of music that will surely find fans of the Sunday afternoon music listening ritual. The sounds on this release are mostly meandering and ponderous. The overwhelming feeling I get from the players is that they somehow know their chops, but are having some difficulty finding their way to the destination. What I especially like is the duo axis of electric violinist Jeff Gauthier and guitarist Nels Cline. This due in the quintet context are allowed to roam free and create the most dazzling meandering crescendos that I'd most recently heard. At times, with the help of bassist Steuart Liebig, these lines are so full and rich, they resemble a full-fledged orchestra. Alex Cline's percussion is ever slight as he concentrates on caressing his cymbals lightly with the brushes. Finally, Scot Ray's trombone work is not robust as one might expect from most players of that instrument. Instead, he decided to add minimal flavours to the dish the group are making as a whole. If anything, his playing is as subdued as the rest of his quintet. But when he solos [as he does on "Scarabaeus"], it's a real treat. There is no rush to get to the destination [which as I'd said, doesn't even exist here]. Overall, this is one record I'll highly recommend to those who love watching the rain [or snow] fall….on a Sunday afternoon.
