ERIK FRIEDLANDER - Quake

Let's face it; it's not easy being a cello player in the world of jazz. People will tend to think what you're actually doing is new music, or worse yet, classical music. I think cellist Erik Friedlander may have had this dilemma most of his life. I remember his work most from John Zorn's Bar Kohkba concert, but from his wild performance with Marty Ehrlich's Dark Woods Ensemble [along with the records "Live Wood" and "Just Before the Dawn"]. His style always took me to another world: one that is more serene, more human than the one we inhibit. It's not so much that his cello work was meandering or down-trodden, it's just that the music that I remember the most was all blues, and ultimately, little sunshine. "Quake" is a little different. For this quartet date, Erik has chosen to employ the brother duo of bassist Stomu Takeishi and percussionist Satoshi Takeishi, along with alto player Andy Laster. The ultimate result is a rich blend of jazz, new music, along with other traditional sounds. Andy Laster does an especially great job at maneuvering around Erik's waves and plucks galore. Erik's cello sounds remind me most of a harsh wind, blowing in from the north, not afraid at any obstacles it may face. The rhythm section is warm enough to keep the proceedings firmly grounded. "Quake" is not a record for a fan of any one particular genre. Rather, it's a record for a fan with an open mind of all music.
