DAVE BURRELL FULL BLOWN TRIO - Expansion
[High Two,
www.hightwo.com]

Judging by the name of the group, I'd expected a real fiery sound from Dave Burrell's new band. "Expansion" [the debut record on a new High Two imprint out of Philadelphia] represents a full-blown session of a different sort. It also marks the return of pianist Dave Burrell into the world of jazz after a brief absence. [This is his first US release in nearly four decades though I swear he did record "Daybreak" for Gazell about 20 years ago.] The release provides one of the high points in Dave Burrell's career. The compositions are varied in theme, but none delivers any less than the crafted melodies we're used to hearing from Dave Burrell. The grace and ingenuity he puts into his playing is still intact. First two pieces "Expansion" and "Double Heartbeat" display the usual odd key changes, along with uneven pacing and a collective sense of urgency. The rhythm section made up of bassist William Parker, together with percussionist Andrew Cyrille shows off a solid back-bone for Dave's playing, which oftentimes swerves into very unusual corners. One of the highlights is Irving Berlin's "They Say It's Wonderful", which possesses the same grandeur that Dave's "Windward Passages" record had so many years ago. The hits he delivers to his piano are so hard, there is no real need for a rhythm section on this track. Burrell has referred to this as his "greatest recorded work". I may not agree with that fully [his solo "Windward Passages" on hathut from 1979 was a much more grand and awesome project] but "Expansion" is still a tour-de-force.
