CARLOS GIFFONI / LEE RANALDO / JIM O'ROURKE - North Six
SAKADA - Never Give Up on the Margins of Logic
[Antiopic,

These two releases comprise the debut of Antiopic's new Live Series that will document the finest improvised music has to offer. In terms of audio, these two 3" CDs could not be more dissimilar.

The first in the batch is a trio disc by guitarist and computer whiz Carlos Giffoni, guitarist Lee Ranaldo and synth-man Jim O'Rourke. "North Six" is a real feast for lovers of noise. This is pure and unadulterated noise. Imagine a train wreck, or worse yet, a barreling avalanche coming straight down at you at 100 miles per hour. This would only tell half of the story of the record. All three players attack with equal brutality. We get glimpses of glorious feedback, electronic mayhem, followed by "softer" guitar manipulations. Hold on a second, there are no softer sections here. This is a fiery steam train speeding down a steep hill with faulty brakes. "North Six" is one record that will please those with open ears for adventure and risks.

Sakada is an ensemble that has recorded in the past, though this is the debut of their expanded version. Recorded at 2003's Freedom of the City Festival in London, the expanded version of the band adds on harpist Rhodri Davies, bassist Margarida Garcia and cellist Mark Wastell [though here, he explores "amplified textures"]. Regular members percussionist Eddie Prevost along with laptop wizard Mattin are still present of course. The 17 minute "Never Give Up on the Margins of Logic" is a journey into the unknown and little chartered territories. Essentially, this is an exercise in assembling the divergent characters of this quintet. The band explores silence as much as unconventional ways of playing "old" instruments. It's a thrill to hear the gurgling and slow-machinated noise [not the blown out of proportion noise, but rather manageable feedback]. You know each member is edging on the next to produce something out-of-the-ordinary; something that makes one take note of the final result. The metallic sounds give the overall recording a fine textural feel. Eddie Prevost uses his percussion with much restraint. Likewise, Margarida Garcia and Rhodri Davies employ their respective instruments bass and harp in unconventional ways to produce a glowing heart for this ensemble to work with. Simply put, recommendation of "Never Give Up on the Margins of Logic" is redundant. [One is only left to ponder, what direction Sakada would go in after the lapse of this track.]
