DWIGHT ASHLEY - Four
DWIGHT ASHLEY - Discrete Carbon

Ambience. OK, you've got me. I love to listen to music as I drift off into my own little dream-world. But there is one catch. I still need to hear music that somehow stimulates my mind. These two new releases from Dwight Ashley are a mixed bag.

Having listened to "Four", I'm not so sure I'm overtly stimulated. The waves he creates on this record with various synthesizers and his guitar simply float in the air, without going anywhere. Once waves hit a beach, I expect some sort of mutation to occur. The wave basically dies, and a brand new one takes its place. On this record, nothing of the kind occurs. What I hear are slight variations on stillness. Stillness is not a bad thing in itself, but once again, the stimulation factor is sadly missing. I love minimalism in music as much as the next person but I still expect that bareness of sound to take me to places I haven't been to.

"Discrete Carbon" [which is a record of earlier works dating back to between 1999 and 2003] is a somewhat more varied collection. The field recordings of wind [to my ears at least, it sounds like howling wind] add to the overall aural structure of the record. The hour long recording is much more austere and disturbing than "Four". In places such as on "Examined by Tweezers" my stomach turns as I get aural visions in my mind of a UFO encounter I had as a kid. Unexpected sounds and variations throw the listener off balance, which I think was the creator's aim on this record. If it's darkness and gut-wrenching music of stillness you're after, I recommend you start your journey into the mind of Dwight Ashley with "Discrete Carbon".
