HEIST - A Shopkeeper Will Not Appear
[Super 8 Recordings,

Once in a long time, a record will come along that will captivate you, mesmerize you, and generally, grab you by the proverbial balls. I'm sitting here and I'm delighting [for the hundredth time] in the second release by Heist "A Shopkeeper Will Not Appear", and I've too many reasons why I can't stop listening to this record over and over and over and over again. It drags you in slowly, but once you're inside, it leaches on you and doesn't let you go! The British quintet 3 women and 2 guys Heist is a throw-back of sorts to a time when things were simpler, when tea tasted better, when James Bond films were worth watching, when sex was still safe. Imagine a pop group that uses what some call "real" instruments [not that samplers or laptops are not considered an instrument] guitars, bass, percussion, kazoo, piano, organ. Then picture a luscious orchestral section complete with cello, viola, trombones, banjo, vibraphone, and trumpet. Blend in some effective male and female vocals [in equal parts], which come complete with gorgeous choruses. The cherry on the top are the lyrics that make you actually think and say "this isn't Brittney Spears!!". These five actually have something to say. In "What Did You Do Today?", they muse on getting old and wasted time "I'll beg, steal or borrow / Can't wait til tomorrow / Cos you never know… / The bitterest taste is the time that we've wasted / We've let it go / We let it go." Sad but true. Equal parts sugar and bitterness, Heist show that they take their fun seriously. Check out their tribute to ABBA in "Business as Usual", where they chime "Can you hear the drums Fernando?" which they do with such honesty, as hard not to cry. Their tongue-in-cheek take on "Sound of Music" and "My Favourite Things" on the track "One Step Forward, Two Steps Back" is so hilarious, it makes me jittery every time I hear it. I think this is what I love best about this record. It's as honest as it is comical. "A Shopkeeper Will Not Appear" is like finding a pearl inside of a shell. For all you tired masses, you disillusioned pop fanatics, you disgruntled music addicts, today is your lucky day. Reap your rewards now!
