DAT Politics - Go Pets Go
[Chicks on Speed Records,]

This batch of releases could easily fall under the realm of naive electronic music, but then again…

American native Nathan Michel's nth record "The Beast" is really an analogue-electronic record disguised as a pop record. [Does that make sense?] Forcing the listener to re-examine their position towards the battle of electronics vs. "real" instruments [as some call them], the recording is a cacophony of softer, gentler pop songs. Nathan [who composed and produced the entire project] plays every single note heard on this all too-brief 40 minute work. Gentle strumming guitars, hushed strokes on the piano, some flavourful marimba, steady beat on his percussion, and the bursts of melodica. This guy can play it all! The songs are very off-key. Yes, they're still pop songs, but they're quirky, with skewed lyrics [that are often only whispered or sung very quietly] and off-beat melodies. Nothing really sticks like it does in a Beatles songs, but at the end of the day, it's still a tangible and a hummable pop song. "A to B" features the haunting and very delicate vocals of Amber Papini, who duels off with Nathan to amazing effect. Electronics are used here sparsely, and when you hear the results, you're bound to end up amazed at the editing techniques Nathan has used. Quick cuts and sudden shifts in landscape make for a sometimes unpredictable ride [even inside of a single song]. Atmospheric, very lush [figuratively and literally too], delicate and warm, "The Beast" is not as scary as the title entails. This is honest music for a dishonest, rotten world.

Talk about a bizarre world! DAT Politics [who happen to be based out of France the country that gave us blue cheese] is one cooky outfit. I suppose they join Nathan Michel [who guests on one track on this record] on a quest to somehow meld the world of electronics with strong pop sensibilities. "Go Pets Go" [what is it with the silly animal costumes that the French seem to love so much?] is an exploration of the silly pop song form. The trio simply jumps through hoops to deliver an album that is as silly in sound as it is in concept. [Actually, I'm not too sure what the concept may be, but it must involve people dressing up as silly looking animals roaming around the house and doing all sorts of whacky things.] Vocals are skewed and altered heavily, while the music is one mish-mash of anything goes. A lot of electronics shift over a slightly acoustic landscape to give us something that is equally bizarre as it is quirky. High pitched voices, tiny little bleeps, cat sounds and general goofiness [think Butthole Surfers and you're warm]. Let's face it, could you ask for anything more from a record? Hoping that DAT Politics don't take themselves too seriously, all I'll say is that "Go Pets Go" is just fun music, with a capital F.
