MANDOG - Big Wednesday
MARBLE SHEEP - For Demolition of a Spiritual Framework

Is instant composing the same thing as improvisation? Perhaps. These two Japanese outfits establish instant composing as a powerful and an equally addictive as improvisation.
First up is the ensemble known as Mandog. Though their line-up is not a steady one, guitarist Keiichi Miyashia [who is also a member of Damo Suzuki's Network] is one constant. This is one 40 minutes that will definitely take you for a wild ride. The guitar sound is shronky, with lots of reverb. The sound is clean but not polished. Yasuyuki Watanabe's percussion is full-blown, tom-tom heavy, freak-out style. Bass playing, courtesy of Takayuki Enomoto is very expressive, and mostly bottom heavy. What I really love about this record is how drone-inducing it is. Sure, some will call this Can-like tribute. To me this is more. This is something you can put on auto-repeat, with each time finding new details, new nuances to delight in. There is no star on this record. Rather, "Big Wednesday" turns out to be a trio record of true equals. If you're looking for an authentic freak-out record, "Big Wednesday" is IT!

Marble Sheep are a different, though not a dissimilar, animal altogether. Founded almost two decades ago by Ken Matsutani [who is also the founder of Captain Trip Records], this is one outfit that is not afraid to rock out in a warm, fuzzy and definitely a psychedelic way. The tunes here are a lot more thought out, if you will. Some vocal stylings are introduced far off underneath the squelching guitars, drums and bass. Once again, the longer tracks such as "Rain" or "The Drop" develop a story line that is mesmerizing and easy to follow. Is this music accessible you ask? I must admit that I haven't truly been a huge fan of psychedelic rock for more than two decades. However, when I'd heard this record, I was equally hooked as I was mesmerized. "For Demolition of a Spiritual Framework" is an exercise as much in excess as it is in adventure.
What is Instant Composing you ask? From what I'd heard so far, it's a meeting of equal minds on a level playing field. It's about players willing to experiment. It's about having balls to make a statement.
