CRIMETIME ORCHESTRA FEAT. BJORNAR ANDRESEN - Life is a Beautiful Monster
THE CORE - Vision

Norway has long been known for some out-there jazz. These two releases showcase the best of [what I term] "dangerous" jazz territory. Both have been released by a new Norwegian jazz label Jazzaway.
First up is the [new-to-my-ears] outfit known as Crimetime Orchestra. Dedicated to the memory of bassist Bjornar Andresen [who passed away only 3 weeks after this session was recorded], "Life is a Beautiful Monster" is a composed cacophony of jazz-meltdown of the highest order. This tentet goes through changes more quickly than Prince changes his stage name. They're not sure, whether they want to present solely composed material at breakneck speeds or whether they want to be exploring the softer scale of the jazz ballad. The wind section is very impressive, especially tenor players Vidar Johansen and Kjetil Moster, along with alto saxophonist Jon Klette both of whom alternate between a full-gale wind and a soft whisper. More colour is added by powerhouse picking of guitarist Anders Hana. The ensemble's palette is well balanced off by Bugge Wesseltoft who gives some cohesion and a blast of colour to the band on his synth along with bassist Bjornar Andresen, who gives a real low-down bottom to the melodies produced by this ensemble. What we get then is very extreme soloing along with interspersing of some quiet passages. "Life is a Beautiful Monster" is definitely music to put on to relieve some pent-up anger.

Norwegian quartet The Core offer up a similar solution to the anger management problem. On "Vision" they offer up five pieces bursting with exhilaration, energy and most of all, are all presented with a great amount of joy. It's not coincidental that the first piece is entitled "Pharoah". With its' extensive soloing from tenor / soprano player Kjetl Moster, it's easy to imagine Pharoah Sanders may have recorded something that sounds like this during the late 60's. The rhythm section made up of bassist Steinar Raknes and drummer Espen Aalberg give a solid grounding upon which the rest of the quartet relieve their much pent-up energy. The only complaint I have about this record is that the off-key piano playing of Erlend Slettevold gets drowned out in the mix. Otherwise, "Vision" is a solid effort from this lesser-known Norwegian outfit that is only screaming out for wider recognition.
