Basil Kirchin - "Abstractions of the Industrial North", Trunk Records
www.trunkrecords.com

Why is it that the name of Basil Kirchin is not known or appreciated world-wide? Why is it that I had difficulties finding him in all of my "complete" guides to jazz? Try browsing the net and see just how little material you'll end up gathering on this quirky percussionist and composer. This record gathers a crucial 1966 recording "Abstractions of the Industrial North", plus it throws in 9 additional tracks which were originally issued as rare De Wolfe 10 inch releases. Having ended his association with big bands of the time, the album itself is from Basil's "imaginary film" period. It is melodic, groove-oriented, airy and at the same time mostly lush. Kenny Wheeler is especially adept as his trumpet goes soaring into the skies at various intervals on the record. Cedric West's swinging guitar playing infuses some bursts of joy throughout the record. The arrangements are straightforward, yet have quirkiness and jump out of the woodwork. This isn't music that you're bound to hear often, though it has a certain aspect of "familiarity" and comfort about it. This is something that comes along once in a long while. Sadly, I'm not all too sure what the term "library music" may mean that has been plastered all over this record? Could it be an equivalent of our elevator music? If that's the case, then I heartily disagree. These tracks are much too engaging to fall asleep too. You'll actually remember this music long after the record has stopped playing. What sticks most in my mind is Penny Whistle's gorgeous arrangement for the flute. [I wonder if it's crucial to mention the fact that Jimmy Page appears on one of the extra tracks on the record or whether this is simply a marketing point for all the Led Zep fans?] Considering it's now the beginning of April and outside it's almost looking like the calendar has caught up to the season, appropriately enough, this is spring music for the soul.
