Fernanda Porto - "Fernanda Porto", Trama
www.trama.com

For a debut CD to be fully ready to be born into the world, a few things have to fall into place. The most important one is that the artist has to be ready and mature enough. The person in question has to have some sort of a vision for what the world will be hearing on a debut, as oftentimes, it's the first impressions that are the most lasting. In Fernanda Porto's case, her debut is both stunning in its clarity of vision as well as in the maturity that she presents to her listeners. Prior to her self-titled debut, Fernanda has apparently been touring for a decade or so, which in itself means one of two things: she's not a virgin waif who allows other honchos to shape her music and she's strong enough to make these songs fly when she's performing live. All but one of the songs on the record were composed by Fernanda [another sign of maturity] and most strikingly, she played all instrumentation as well as did all of her own programming on the record. She co-wrote the songs with Brazilian lyricists and renowned poets such as Paulo Leminsky, Edu Ruia, Ledusha, Martha Medeiros, Arnaldo Antunes and Lina de Albuquerque. What does this Brazilian diva's music sound like, you ask? Imagine a sweeter, more sublime Marisa Monte surrounded by overwhelming drum'n'bass elements and "real" instruments to boot, and you'll get part of the picture. This is samba, maracatu and bossa nova for the club crowd. The music is almost hushed and Fernanda's voice is sometimes whispered and unites with instruments, which is somewhat of a drawback. Otherwise, had this CD been released at the beginning of the 90's, it would have been a perfect soundtrack for the chill-out rooms that were ever so popular then. I can only hope that Fernanda will be staunch and will define herself through music on future releases.
