Christ. - "Seeing and Doing", Benbecula

Kyo Ichinose - "Iontano", Cubic Music

Prhizzm - "Prhizzm EP", Benbecula

Atmospheric music. You either love it, hate it or perhaps you may remain indifferent to it, at which point it just becomes wallpaper. I'm happy to report that none of these releases could in the remotest sense be ever called wallpaper music.

Christ.'s new EP "Seeing and Doing" takes atmospherics to a new level. Definitely dark and ominous music, this EP allows Christ. to ponder his path before his next full-length release is unleashed on the world at the end of the year. The beats are muddied by squelching effects. The pace is turtle-slow, which is to say perfect [I can't imagine what this music would sound like if it were sped up]. Echoing voices and sounds of processed water or waves [I can't tell] come in and out of the mix. Rustling of paper and windy landscapes are all meshed up into one big glob. You can clearly hear how Christ.'s sense of adventure is bursting out all over the place. As a bonus, we also get a video of "Always to Play". Albeit brief [clocking in at only 24 minutes], "Seeing and Doing" establishes Christ. as a major figure in the world of electronica.

Japanese composer Kyo Ichinose's second release "Iontano" is a further proof that atmospheric music, when done right is to die for. "Iontano" [an Italian word which means from a distance] is full of music that is as ambient as it is orchestral. Kyo chose to utilize a small chorus of vocalists along with sampled voice along with a string ensemble to produce an album that defines the very meaning of atmospheric music. It REALLY creates a unique environment, where Kyo acts as the master and chief in command. Picture of a large [and loud] but far away airplane on the cover shouldn't frighten anyone off. This is ultimately a venture into a world that is quiet, hushed and very, very still. The only drawback with the record as a whole is that midway our calm world comes crashing in as "Tokyo" is introduced. The exotic, old-school, deliberately squeaky synth work seems too far out-of-place and inexcusably breaks the mood of the piece as a whole. Otherwise, the record is a melting pot, where electronics meet processed voices and string instruments. The results are truly stunning. Consider "Iontano" a breath of fresh air. This is really living and breathing music.

Prhizzm's self-titled debut EP is another atmospheric creation that lets the listener sail on the brainwaves of its' Canadian creator [Prhizzm is actually a moniker for Toronto-based producer Brendan Dellandrea]. This is a very dense recording as the creator is not afraid to pack as many bleeps and glittering blotches of sparkling sound wherever he pleases. The grooves are interestingly varied, from some fast break-beats to more mellow tones.

What's most interesting is how many permutations each of the tracks undergoes within the actual track itself. Either Brendan gets bored very quickly with a set sound, or he just want to please everybody at the same time. The echo-effects are predominantly present and the squelching samples are varied to an extreme point. If Prhizzm's release doesn't wake you from your winter slumber, then there very little hope indeed. Consider this atmospheric music for those of us with short attention spans.
