David Eliott Incigneri - "I Sat on the Corner of a Page of the Novel of My Mind"
Mieli - "Version"
Comatone - "E-50"

Is it fair to comment on the state of music in Australia based solely on three releases? Probably not. This is why I'll say flat out that I refuse to believe these are the only interesting things happening in the land down under from a musical perspective. I know there's more. The ONLY unifying factor then, tying these three releases is simply the fact that all are by Australian artists.

The first release "I Sat on the Corner of a Page of the Novel of My Mind" is a debut by Melbourne native David Eliott Incigneri. David is a prolific home-producer, meaning he has more than 100 home recordings [including 8 full-length albums] to his name in the last 5 years alone. For some reason, this is only the first to be released. What's the record all about, you ask. It's actually about a little bit of everything. Beginning with "Sad Things" - an almost Robert Wyatt lo-fi homage circa "Old Rottenhat". Later on, David moves between skewed psychedelia, lo-fi pop and even updated beat poetry. But don't despair, David also loves to experiment, laying down some heavily processed guitar licks, messing around on his keyboards, skewing his voice and doing all the things any good home producer would. With a cheap beat-box as accompaniment, David swoons over a number of subjects. Truth is his voice has this down-to-earth honesty to it, though it must be said, that honesty is mostly grinding and filled with dread. Whether you look at this as drug-induced music or music to pop pills to, David Eliott Incigneri's debut is a trip waiting to happen.

Mieli is a moniker adopted by Brisbane artist Ryan Gobbe. The world this musician inhibits is full of clicks, pops, crackles and the ever slight rhythmic structures. Light and almost-dub aura permeates most of the record. This is neither ambient music in its purest sense of the word or is this eclectic electronica. Ryan has us believe that he can actually bring the two worlds together, which for the most part, he does. Don't mistake "Version" for a dance floor, move-your-ass record. Stuff that Ryan achieves on the record is more prone to be enjoyed at a lounge bar or in the confines of your bedroom. The crystalline samples, effects and slow-moving grooves make for an atmosphere that is spring-like and lush. Enough innovative steps and turns on the record keep proceedings interesting every minute. We can only hope there is more music like this in the vaults from Mieli in the near future.

Greg Seiler likes to dress up as Comatone. "E-50" is a new release from this Melbourne electronic artist, whose love for the perfect beat takes him to many wonderful places. Using his Apple G4 and various synths and samplers, Greg basically sat around the studio, created drum loops and then layered synth parts on top. What results is an album that is stop-and-go break-beat electronica at its finest. Drum loops often change directions, while within a single track, miniature sub-tracks seem to take a life of their own. One word that ultimately comes to mind when listening to this record is organic. This isn't soul-less electronica. This is music with a warm, glowing heart at its vortex. Sure, the music sometimes goes at a million BPMs at times, but don't let that scare you. This isn't some race that Camatone is trying to win. User-friendly, edible and heavy on the grooves, "E-50" is like an old bottle of wine you're saving for a special occasion. Time of hesitation is over.
