LUSINE - Inside/Out

You just couldn't ask for two acts more diversified as these two from the same label.

Chicago's Kill Memory Crash is industrial music with a hard-beat edge. On their latest 12" release "Crash V8", the duo of Alex and Adam are out on a mission to save the world from what some call "wimpy" music - you know, the music for people without any balls. Theirs is a dark swerving ride through ominous memory cells of their past lives in Detroit, where Kill Memory Crash began their careers as favourites of the warehouse and rave party scenes during the 90's. Their pounding beats are heavily regimented and precisely executed. I can't imagine any allowance for an error here. The vocal delivery is stark and heavily processed. Check out "T. Bombay" [an exclusive track which doesn't appear on their new full length "American Automatic"] - where the jittery sledge-hammer beat is drilled into your head almost as if you were some poor loose nail. "Crash V8" comes in its original, fast-moving, more dance-oriented 12" remix version, along with a Richard Devine mix, which is full of glitches, pops, hums and extended movements of total chaos. Overall, "Crash V8" turns out to be a great 12" full of great promise for their new album.

If you're looking for a more relaxed release from the people at Ghostly, Lusine's new 12" "Inside/Out" should prove to do the trick very nicely. Jeff McIlwain - the one man team of Lusine - shines as the master of glitchy, glittery but ultimately very pop-like beats. The title track is nothing more than break-beat heaven with shades of a vocalist trying to pop out from underneath the airy mix. Check out the gorgeous sun-drenched, balmy sounds on "Sunset". The very hick-up like progression of "These Things" is augmented and livened up with sampled female vocals [which sound Portuguese, but I could be wrong]. Once the bass kicks in, we're in for a mid-tempo groove-fest that doesn't stop until the record stops spinning. What I love the most about this 12" is how jittery it all sounds. Jeff has some excellent ideas and knows how to bring them to fruition. "Inside/Out" is a real catch for the warm, humid summer months.
