PHIL MINTON / VERYAN WESTON - "WAYS OUT EAST, WAYS OUT WEST", Intakt
www.intaktrec.ch

The enduring collaborative spirit of vocalist Phil Minton and pianist [vocalist] Veryan Weston sees another incarnation in this new release.

'Ways Out East, Ways Out West' is a duo study of early 20th century Russian anarchist Nestor Makhno, whom both artists feel has been overlooked in the history books. Originally commissioned to be an eight piece all vocal tribute, which was performed at Taktlos Music Festival back in 1993, the concept was scaled down to the original core duo [perhaps for logistical reasons alone]. These are difficult ideas the duo are haggling with. Class struggle, resistance and butting your head against the political tides were never easy topics to be put across in a song format. Hearing these two do what they do best makes these concepts come alive with new found energy.

Phil Minton's usual [though NEVER dull!] vocal imitations of bird chirps, sweeping winds, gurgling noises and screams of agony are a real burst here. If and when he does come across sounding a bit like Donald Duck on helium, that's only because there is an utter and absolute need for it. Phil is an entertainer and let's face it; these unique sounds that he has mastered over the decades have now become a part of his act for good. [It's sometimes a matter of not being able to segregate the performer from his tools.] Phil's long-time musical partner, Veryan Weston serves as the perfect counter-point to Phil's mad vocal machinations. His piano playing is specifically sparse so that it's the duo's vocals that come through right upfront. He provides wonderful squeaky shades with his organ that only add colour to the proceedings. If music with a sense of adventure poses a challenge for you, there is no need to be scared. Many of the tunes are vaudevillian and even operatic in their scope. In fact, the duo can be as straight as straight can be. Check out their take on the union anthem 'Solidarity Forever' or the gorgeous 'Big Rock Candy Mountain'. All that's missing at the end of the record is the applause of the audience.
