NODERN - "Nodern", Sub Rosa
www.subrosa.net

It's never easy to leave a mark for yourself based on a sole record. A debut release is an even trickier affair. Bathed in sonic light and unsure where to go, Nodern delivers a self-titled debut that is as rich in imaginary as it is ultimately confounding. For convenience, the album is divided up into two equal halves. The first section is devoted to shorter, song-like structures. Everything is thrown in here - from the aural assault of 'Nodern Loves You' [which features an obscenity that is then covered up in a pool of noise] to the sexy beats of 'Cool It', to the minimal break-beats of 'Lockerbroom Rumble'. First section is more or less meant to introduce the mysterious Nodern to the public. After all the formalities have been taken care off, we get the second section which is a lot more challenging. 'The Coal Mine Worker' is a lush adventure into ambient territory. Whispers are converted to amber soundscapes as an imaginary wind sweeps behind your ears. 'National Republic of Hairlip' explores the minimal and hushed pounding tambourine beat that is sampled for eternity.

The album ends on a quiet mode with 'Crutch Receiver', where melody is onlyhinted at ' as a cave like water drop permeates the room. In all, Nodern attempts a lot in little time. Some say, too much of a good thing is not good. I say it's a good thing Nodern has ambition oozing out of his pores.
vWatch for this guy ' whoever he may really be.
