ALEJANDRA AND AERON - "Porto (Folklore fragments volume 2)", Lucky Kitchen
www.luckykitchen.com

For Spanish electronic duo Alejandra and Aeron, 'Porto' was a labour of love. For two months, they had meticulously scoured the streets of the beautiful Portuguese city of Porto for sounds that were lost, forgotten or simply ignored. One of their aims was to find and preserve on tape the older parts of town ' the crumbling buildings, the sounds of the side streets, basically the sounds of the city. The CD proper is split into four seamless sections ' quotidian traditions, celebration and ritual, elaboration and music preservation. Each one brings the sounds of Porto that much closer. Originally presented as a multi-media installation in Portugal, 'Porto' stands on its own terms, even without the stage and video elements being present. What I love the most about the CD itself is the large Alan Lomax element that it possesses. This is documentation not for profit, but for the sake of pure preservation. What's there not to love here? From the sounds of a barber styling some older men's hair, to anglers fishing on the river, to the sound of boat horns, a procession of faithful walking down a street to the sounds of Portugal beating England during Eurocup 2004 ' these are all real sounds of the city. Unfiltered, unadulterated and certainly not processed. Check out 'Rita and Adriano Sing Without Accompaniment' for some of the most impassioned and bare accapela vocals you're bound to hear from that continent. The sounds are miked at close range and everything sounds as if it were happening right outside of your front door. Best listened to on headphones, 'Porto' turns out to be an audio travel guide of the highest quality.
