FIELDWORK - "Simulated Progress", PI Recordings
www.pirecordings.com

For any ensemble to be considered original, they must play something truly great or at least put across notions that are novel. Fieldwork does both.

The trio made up of pianist Vijay Iyer, saxophonist Steve Lehman and percussionist Elliot Humberto Kavee tease our eardrums with some of the freshest ideas in the field of jazz in a long while. While this sort of line-up has been tried before, what remains novel is their approach to their music. Highly angular, non-linear grooves and melodies is what this trio tends to favour. Vijay's piano work is pointed and highly pensive. It's almost as if he was in deep thought long before each single key is struck with his fingers. The great thing to rejoice is we get some of the most inventive work on the continent. Alto and soprano playing of Steve Lehman is sharp and direct ' not wasting any time with his message, he doesn't hesitate in getting straight to the point without unnecessary soloing. Finally, Elliot Humberto Kavee's drumming is flat out pounding and upfront. His bottom heavy percussion work is mixed right up-front with the other two members of the trio, making this sound like a rock, rather than a jazz trio.

This is yet another reason why 'Simulated Progress' succeeds. Boundaries are there to be crossed and Fieldwork has just passed another check-point.
