BAIKONOUR - For the Lonely Hearts of the Cosmos
[Melodic, www.melodic.co.uk]

Baikonour was a Soviet launch base that blasted many a rocket in its heyday. The music version of Baikonour is one English guy Jean-Emmanuel Krieger, whose fascination heavily leans in the direction of space. Is it surprising then that "For the Lonely Hearts of the Cosmos" is some 40 minutes filled with space music? Groove-oriented, heavy guitar rock music is what essentially this record could be described at in a little nutshell. Right from the start, the space race is on. From the synthesizer-drenched "Lick Lokoum", we move comfortably into the groove and organ heavy rock-out on "Coltan Anyone?" This is really the album's anthem, as the fuzzy guitars mesh with the grand percussion and the warm organs. We basically get wordless prog-rock, complete with all the sounds from space. Later on, Jean profusely refuses to give up his love for the organ, as he drowns the eardrums with "Rusk Plasmique" and "60 to 0" - both basically an organ instrumentals. In a few places - such as on the warm guitar interlude "Interquaalude" - I get distinct flashbacks to My Bloody Valentine. Otherwise, the gentle winds of Deep Purple and other prog-rock acts come sharply into view. But don't get disheartened, for heavy Krautrock elements are heard here as well. Those loopy melodies and those washed out repetitive grooves are everywhere. Distorted guitars, heavy percussion and that ever-present organ ensure this is a pleasant flashback. Get on board you freaks! Your spaceship is docking now at Baikonour.
