GERRY HEMINGWAY QUINTET - Double Blues Crossing
[Between The Lines, www.betweenthelines.de]

It's always difficult to be critical about the music made by a person that for me personally has epitomized the real gift of music creation. What I'm trying to say is Gerry Hemingway's music has for the past two decades raped my heart and left me for dead. Considering that some of the most crucial works in his back-catalogue [most of his hathut releases, his most daring releases for Random Acoustics, along with his previous release on Between The Lines "Songs"] are criminally out of print, newcomers to his work should cling on to every single new piece he puts out as if it were some sort of a Christmas gift. His latest release with his quintet, "Double Blues Crossing" [a play on words on the long-out-of-print Quintet debut, the Sound Aspects release "Outerbridge Crossing" from 1985] once again puts his compositional talents right up front. Just as "Perfect World" [his out-of-print Random Acoustic release] was a difficult cookie to bite into, so is this release. Gerry's ideas are as non-linear and left-field as ever. Half-way through a composition, he tends to change the speed, the key and the mood of the music so drastically; you'd swear you were listening to another record altogether. The only remaining member of the original quintet from two decades ago is the leader. Otherwise, Frank Gratkowski joins the band on clarinets and saxophone duties, along with trombonist Wolter Wierbos [who was a pivotal part in Gerry's hathut Quintets], cellist Amit Sen along with bassist Kermit Driscoll. Throughout the title piece [which is divided into five sub-sections], the direction of the band changes often and quickly. Gerry is now using moderate amounts of sampled material as is evident when we hear some frogs [during the latter part of "Double Blues Crossing" suite] or high-pitched cymbal-like sounds [on "Night Town/Tent"]. Something else he's gotten himself into in a big way is marimba. Just about every piece on the record features the clickety sounds of this underused instrument in a generous way. Every player he utilizes here is a real asset. Wolter Wierbos' trombone farts are as plentiful as ever, while the dual string attack of cellist Amit Sen and bassist Kermit Driscoll is always energetic. Gerry's playing is as precise, underplayed and subdued as ever. Not being one to show off his talent, he sticks to the notion that his quintet is king and every little nuance he plays serves the greater good of the group. The album ends on a real high note [as is usually the case for Gerry with these "concept" works] with "Slowly Rising", which turns out to be nothing short of a waltz-like number. To be fair, this isn't really jazz in its purest sense, nor is it improvised music as such. If anyone is in need of a label, new music would fit best. Precisely executed and amazingly crafted, this is yet another one in a long line of Gerry Hemingway albums that is guaranteed to stand the test of time.
