TIM BERNE'S BLOODCOUNT - Memory Select - The Paris Concert III

MARC JOHNSON'S RIGHT BRAIN PATROL - Magic Labyrinth

PAUL MOTIAN TRIO - At The Village Vanguard

[JMT / Winter & Winter, www.winterandwinter.com]

As the JMT re-issue program winds down [courtesy of Winter & Winter's thorough program], these last three releases represent the final instalments of the complete 81 CD package that was once in its day, a brave sub-label of Polygram.

Having recorded some of his best work for JMT, saxophonist Tim Berne's closing opus for that label in 1995, was a triple live "The Paris Concert" recording. Recorded in September of 1994 at Paris' Instants Chavires, "Memory Select" was the closer of the trilogy. Featuring a who's who of jazz from a decade ago, Bloodcount was a powerhouse to be reckoned with. The dual saxophone and clarinet attack of Tim Berne along with Chris Speed was augmented with the rhythm section of bassist Michael Formanek and percussionist Jim Black, along with guitarist Marc Ducret. A word of warning, though Bloodcount was known to be a powerful outfit, this is the most serene and contemplative disc of the trio Paris dates. Starting off with a duo of klezmer clarinet melodies played by Chris Speed along with lightly sprinkled guitar played by Marc Ducret, the two long pieces develop slowly and carefully. It's important that every member of the group gets their own time to solo or play with a partner. Jim Black's understated percussion solo in the middle of "Jazz Off" is especially convincing. Later, on "Eye Contact", when Marc Ducret goes wild and starts to blow his top. While wildly picking on the guitar in a duo with Jim Black's now pounding percussion, this is truly a moment to behold. Then, the record's golden pinnacle arrives as Bloodcount shows off its muscle. Tim Berne joins in the duo on alto, along with the wild tenor blasts from Chris Speed and all is well with the world again. Fall of 1994 truly saw Tim Berne at his best.

Bassist Marc Johnson will always be remembered for his Right Brain Patrol trio that he specifically created during the early 90's as a working unit. Second release for JMT "Magic Labyrinth" saw a bit of a change as guitarist Ben Monder was replaced by Austrian guitar hero Wolfgang Muthspiel. Where his "Right Brain Patrol" from 1993 had a more mellowed out world sound, "Magic Labyrinth" delivers a more improvisational outlook into Johnson's music. Sure, there are still "world" elements. Check out percussionist Arto Tunçboyaciyan gorgeous vocals on "J.P." As he settles into a comfortable groove, Marc walks in with a steady rhythm. The piece's melancholy feel is completed by Wolfgang's multi-faceted guitar solos. Because it fits much better with the ideas of the other members of the trio, Wolfgang's contributions on the acoustic guitar is much stronger than his electric work. The album's best passages are heard when Marc's steady bass plucking is accompanied by Arto's stark and flavourful percussion work. Beautifully realized and wonderfully thought out. It's a shame that Right Brain Patrol never took off in the long run.

At the time of its release a decade ago, I remember thinking that "At The Village Vanguard" was a rather unusual album. For his choice of instrumentation alone, I allotted the record a high rating. Having a bass-less trio takes some courage after all. Tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano and guitarist Bill Frisell make up fine companions to percussionist Paul Motian. The music Paul wrote for this performance is very angular and jagged. In fact, other than the tender and almost soppy opening cover shot of "You Took The Words Right Out of My Heart", the remainder of the record sounds like pure improvisational genius. Sure, there are themes that one of the members will address every now and then, but the band seems to be playing loosely and freely. It sounds as if whatever restrictions they had at the beginning of their Village Vanguard concerts were abandoned. This must surely be one of Bill Frisell's better moments. Where else can you recall him grabbing that rough James Blood Ulmer sound and just freely running with it. Likewise, when Joe Lovano plays dirty lines on his tenor alongside Paul Motian's subtle percussive palette, it's clear that adding a bassist to the group would have been senseless. Clearly, this was a peak for a trio that at this point was already used to being at the top of their game.
