DR. ISRAEL - Inna City Pressure

DR. ISRAEL PRESENTS DREADTONE INTERNATIONAL - Patterns of War

[Roir, www.roir-usa.com]

When Dr. Israel originally released "Inna City Pressure" in 1998, he had no idea that the record would get so much critical acclaim or that it would change the possibilities that have opened up for jungle-roots-d'n'b- reggae and the way that music is perceived for years to come. This reissue [which comes complete with a couple of bonus tracks and a re-mixed version of "Revolution"] is 60 minutes of life affirming, earth shattering and most importantly boundary breaking music for the mind and the soul. How is it ground-breaking, you ask? Dr. Israel is not for one minute afraid to mix things up. Right from the opening all-vocal "Inna City", where he infuses with anger "I will not lay down and die!", you get the sense this is going to be a different sort of an adventure. Then, once we arrive at "Pressure", we get a crazed d'n'b reggae excursion. If we move a few steps forward into "The Doctor vs. The Wizard", we get a metal vs. reggae adventure. The slower moment comes in the form of an underplayed version of "Armageddon Time", which despite its less- than-crazy pace, sounds just as angry as all the previous cover versions before it. The saddest track here is "Life in the Ghetto", which through Dr. Israel's bare and honest rapping exhumes the tragedy of a family torn apart by drugs and poverty. It's a good thing Dr. Israel is not afraid to wear his influences on his sleeve. Shades of Bad Brains, Sly & Robbie, Linton Kwesi Johnson and even old Motown emerge from the mix. This is a free-for-all. But make no mistake; this is an album with a purpose. Sure, the messages are stern and the tone is righteous. Politically and socially charged to the max and brimming with cross-over pounding dub, reggae, d'n'b, metal and even straight-forward melodies. To state the obvious is too simple. No matter what side of the fence you're on, "Inna City Pressure" is a masterpiece.

"Patterns of War" is Dr. Israel's first studio outing in more than three years. This time around, he's collaborating with a young Brooklyn collective Dreadtone International. The sound is just as dub heavy as "Inna City Pressure", though the rhythms are now a lot more settled, somewhat more relaxed and at times even easy going. Dr. Israel's typical socially charged vocals are enhanced by Lady K and Chemda [who did some vocals in Conjure One], who provide some inspirational and highly uplifting vocalizations. If you think he lost his charm for mixing things up, then check out "Interference" as the metal heavy assault meets a deep, sludgy dub. Speaking of dub, a large part of the record seems to concentrate on a steady dub, especially towards the end. Heavy pounding bass ensures pure enjoyment of the sounds is kept at an absolute peak. The verdict is in. We have another fine release from the righteous dub-reggae soldier.
