SAFETY SCISSORS - Tainted Lunch
[~scape, www.scape-music.de]

Where has electronic pop music gone wrong? Is it that in its search for the new America, it made the wrong turn, turned up its nose at the snobbishness of the superiority of the bullshitters and in turn, became childish? These two releases showcase the good and the bad of electronic-tinged pop music.
You either have to love pop music to get Aswefall's debut "Bleed" or you're bound to simply hate it. Albeit brief [running at just under 33 minutes], the record is a world of its own and is certainly long enough to present all ideas without boring its listener to death. Two people responsible for Aswefall are producer-DJ combo of Clément Vaché and Léo Helldén. The mix is presented without heavy obstructions or deviations. I get all sorts of flashbacks as I listen to some of these songs. "Between us" can without a doubt be considered a Mazzy Star knock-off, complete with lush female vocals and tender folk back-beat. Then again, "As I Fall" is a fairly straight reading of some of the softer shoe-gazing bands of late 80's. Lush comes to mind immediately. Other tracks are reminiscent of Bill Pritchard's glory days, circa late 80's when he released "Three Months, Three Weeks and Two Days". I guess in the end, it tends to be somewhat derivative and leaning in favour of the 80's as the decade of choice. This isn't a bad thing as the album is well produced and lusciously realized. At the end of the record, I was left fully satiated and richer for the fact that someone out there has done their history homework. Simply put, "Bleed" is pop music in the purest sense of the word.

Safety Scissors - which is basically a one man act of Matthew Patterson Curry and his beat-boxes - strike again with their second release entitled "Tainted Lunch". This is where I see pop-electronica going wrong. Sure, it's great to be retroactive and look back-wards to the 80's with a gleam in your smile and a tear in your eye, as Aswefall have done. But while Aswefall improved on the 80's by using subtle electronics to give their album a more modern feel, Safety Scissors is all too happy to sit in the trenches and sounds more 80's than most of the 80's bands themselves. Sure, Arthur Rimbaud's poem is given a nice re-working on "I am the cheese", but rest of the album just sounds like recycled Devo or New Order records without much of a variation. Not enough afterthought was given to the end result. Sure, the process may sound somewhat fresh since Vladislav Delay mixed the whole record. Tiny little beeps and clicks escape from the speakers almost as if by accident. Ultimately, the end result is dry and while I know this was supposed to sound hilarious, none of it is funny at all. It doesn't help that Matthew's voice is so damn depressing. There's one thing he's good at which is not evoking any emotions or inflection in his voice. Almost as if to say, "listen to me - I can play this straight!". Even when Kevin Blechdom joins Safety Scissors on "After Disaster" and does a likeable impression of a terrified girl "My pants are wet. How can that be? Did I spill water? It's pee!" - it's a rather lacklustre scene. Whether this is good music or not, I'm not sure. One thing for sure, you can easily file this under kids music section.
