ALEXANDER TUCKER - Old Fog
[ATP Records, www.alltomorrowsparties.co.uk]

"Old Fog" is a sort of a record that can bring the most cheerful person down into an emotional spiral. It's best listened to during a rainstorm or in the midst of a cold winter. All disclaimers aside, this solo recording from Alexander Tucker turns out to be a goldmine of riches. Solo processed guitar has rarely sounded so rich and homely. Tucker has been a friend of Jackie-O Motherfucker, which I supposed explains the fascination with the record and the interest in this neo-folk revival of sorts. [He's such a tight friend in fact, that on Jackie-O's last UK tour; he played as part of their entourage.] His vocals are not really reminiscent of anything I'd heard in the past. Sure, they're spooked out and eerie, but at the same time, they're warm and oddly inviting. I've no idea what it is that invites me back to repeat listening? Processed piano and heavily processed guitars [along with a few dibs at field recordings] all sound tentative, almost as if asking for the direction to an unknown destination. Check out the improvisation on "Alhadeff Music", where the bowing of the bass, the crackling of the cymbals and the pensive piano make for a strangely warm listening experience. More and more, I'm being lured into the neo-folk psychedelic movement. To be honest, for all I care, it could be some sort of a cult, and I love it! Maybe it's the idea of owning a home in the backwoods of UK or maybe something from my childhood keeps haunting me, but this music is the soundtrack to that long lost past.
