KEIJI HAINO - Konokehai fujirareteru hajimarini
[PSF Records, www.psfrecords.com]

Highly prolific Japanese multi-instrumentalist superstar Keiji Haino delights with the latest batch of new releases.
For starters, we have Sanhedolin - a trio made up of Keiji on guitar [and some vocals] along with two Ruins alumni - Tatsuya Yoshida on drums and Mitsuru Nasuno on bass. This is the sort of dirty free metal that I remember from the days of Last Exit [minus Peter Brotzmann's killer sax barrages, of course]. Purest noise metal has rarely sounded this truly pissed-off, this fucked up. The beauty of the recording is the guttural vocal machinations of Haino himself. He's one pissed-off guy and in between the sonic barrages of over- fed, pounding drums and Haino's scorching feedback guitar solos, he tends to scream loud and angry bursts of grunts. They're probably not words; they're just grunts, howls and belches. Bassist Mitsuro Nasuno does a fine job at keeping this trio in place, though at times, even his playing is simply reduced to primal pounding on the bass. It's the aggressive-as-hell pounding of drummer Tatsuya Yoshida that really makes this record for me. Like some sort of a madman, he just pounds away on his skins, madly but full of hot sweating passion. While my ear drums bleed, as I turn up the volume as loud as it will possibly go, I can barely hear myself think, but when I hear my thoughts, they seem to tell me this is a pretty hot metal meltdown piss- your-neighbours off exercise.

With a disclaimer such as "Please turn up the volume as much as you can. This music has faint sound", you'd think Keiji Haino was joking. But on his solo percussion record "Konokehai fujirareteru hajimarini" ["Global Ancient Atmosphere"], it looks like Keiji is quite serious. This is his umpteenth foray into the world of percussion, though he's favoured the guitar as an instrument of choice. Paradox may have it, this is music that is rather stark and direct, while being withdrawn and completely focused. It looks as if Keiji wanted to showcase a quieter, more withdrawn side of himself on percussion and I'm glad to report, it works. He spills out his pounding on the drum set in brief, almost sporadic spurts. It's almost as if he were contemplating his next move as he is playing. In other words, this is multi-tasking to the fullest. Keiji sits down at his drum set, he slowly starts playing a gentle drum roll, then the next, and then there's a little pause of contemplation while he considers his next move. In fact, this is almost like a game of chess, where Keiji is in charge of the game, but he needs that extra second or two to contemplate where the king or pawn should move next. The most difficult thing is judging this record as a whole. Is this a great percussion record? Certainly not. Too much instruction-like style [as in, listen to Great Me, now I'm hitting the cymbals really slowly, while pounding on the bass drum with my foot] doesn't allow the listener much enjoyment. Then again, the question begs to be asked, is this a good Keiji Haino record? The answer is a simple maybe.
