KPTMICHIGAN - KptMichigan
[Aesthetics, www.aesthetics-usa.com]

Look everybody - it's another laptop hippie! KptMichigan [or Michael Beckett - who now is also a part of Schneider TM's live ensemble] is a German musician who values what technology has blessed him with. If it wasn't for his laptop, basically we wouldn't have much left in terms of this record. There are two things this guy loves - technology and noise at extreme levels. Technology is a wondrous thing, but the noise can get aggravating, especially when you know this guy has well written pop songs underneath this barrage of feedback and white noise. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember My Bloody Valentine doing this sort of thing live in an ear-bleeding concert I once saw. It was so bloody loud, my ears bled despite the earplugs which I had securely installed. Nonetheless, there is still something charming in the way KptMichigan delivers his noise-heavy pop songs with a serious face. I've no idea what the songs are about, which means that maybe he's just babbling or cursing away for all we know. It's almost a shame that it's not until nearly the end of the record when we finally get to glimpse his pop sensibilities on "Coughsong". Then again, as we revel in its pop beauty, all of this is interrupted with another massive noise frenzy. Don't get me wrong, there are still some worthwhile moments on the record. Even the folk-heavy anthem "Some People Take Tablets" is fascinating enough. In the end, you'll either love or hate this record but whatever side of the fence you're sitting on, your feelings are bound to be extreme. As for me, I'm stuck somewhere in the neverland of indecision.
