GUNTER MULLER / STEINBRUCHEL - Perspectives
[List, www.list-en.com]

What can you say about Günter Müller's most recent output? Is he getting even more daring and adventurous with his latest collaborations?
Müller has collaborated with Voice Crack on a number of records [check out For4Ears's back catalogue - "Table, Chair, and Hatstand", "Buda_Rom", "q"], none of which could ever be called disappointing or unenlightened. This time around on "Wireless_Within", the project seems to be centered around Australian based electronics artist Philip Samartzis, whom Müller collaborated with previously on "Strange Love" [also out on For4Ears]. So, what sets this project apart from the others? Clearly, there is a sense of unity as the axis of Müller and Voice Crack seem to have matured a lot, which is rather ironic as this turned out to be one of the last recordings Voice Crack did as a duo. The sounds are more evened-out. There are no extremes to be heard [unless, of course you consider an entire hour of high pitched electronics blasting at your ears an extreme?]. According to Philip Samartzis, most of the sounds on this record were done in post production. Prepare yourself, for the sounds are high-pitched to the max. At times, you'll imagine pictures of aliens coming down to earth and blowing up humans to bits, while in other sections, you'll get a distinct notion that you're listening to some sort of a metallic wind. Since I don't want to frighten any listeners, I'll add that the sounds [though they are high-pitched sine waves with a ton of electronics] retain a calming quality about them. Whether you're willing to dive head deep into this musical pool is entirely up to you. Günter Müller's next collaboration arrives in the form of "Perspectives", a duo with Swiss artist Ralph Steinbrüchel. Recorded at live performances between December 2003 and May 2004 in Geneva, Berlin, Paris, Basel and Bologna, each artist then processed and finalized half of the tracks at their home studios. Result is a warmer sound than is evident on "Wireless_Within". The hums and drill-like concoctions along with oddly comforting high-pitched glitches invite you into the world these two musicians have created. Considering Steinbrüchel is actually a sound and installation artist, the pieces he mixes seem to be somewhat more organic, somehow more accessible and welcoming. Slowly humming along like some sort of an electronic toy that needs batteries, these sounds give us only a glimmer of what it would be like to see the duo live. The final track "Paris aux_*" adds a guest in the form of guitarist and electronic guru Hervé Boghossian. Here, the sound is further enriched by an oscillating drone-like structure that simply hums along with the duo. Is it crucial to point out a simple fact that Müller has long abandoned his drum set and now plays various electronics, Minidisc, iPod and that Steinbrüchel works on the laptop? This info may actually be redundant as what is actually at stake are the sounds proper, not the tools used to generate them. Contemplative and even serene [in an electronic sort of way], the duo sessions on "Perspectives" are quite enriching and stimulating and we can only hope there is more sponsorship in the works for outings such as this one.
