DREKKA - Extractioning

ANNELIES MONSERE - Helder
[Blue Sanct, www.bluesanct.com]

How can I tie up these two releases nicely other than to say that both feature oblique neo-folk, messed up drone music, which happens to be released by the same label.

Drekka is one Michael Anderson whose main interest seems to lie in this brand of neo-psychedelic-brain-altering folk music. All I know about this guy is he has a fetish for wearing a spooky looking cat mask and oddly enough, his music is equally dour and spooked out. Cheap recording technology is at the core of this project. Cloudy sound and a fog that covers most of this release are the two factors that make this a memorable record. The sound is gloriously bleak. A tiny passage of plucked guitar here and a few drum rolls over there is about as much as you can expect. But then, we get into the actual songs. "Love Without Sound" smells like a bleak Dinosaur Jr. tribute, while a depressing take on Cat Power's "What Would The Community Think?" is slow, morose and ever bleak. When Michael sings on the record, it's almost as if he were taking his very last breath. The tired, non-embellished vocal chords sound tired, even purposefully weak. One of the best tracks is "Psalm 99 (100)", which features distorted guitars, along with some haunting source material from a boy's choir. This music is glorious in its lo-fi ambience, in its bleakness and its stillness. Ultimately, don't expect grand revelations on the record or fireworks. Simply, expect honesty.

Belgian chanteuse Annelies Monseré has a voice of a waif. Her debut full-length "Helder" is an intense, albeit all too-brief [clocking at a bare 30 minute mark] study of the human voice. I'll also add the fact that this is a woman striving to travel the paths less traveled - the back roads, if you will. Imagine Nick Drake's hushed and barren vocals, multiply this by a thousand and slow the pacing in half and you'll get an idea of what this record sounds like. I'm not sure what Annelies is singing about [I really don't]. Maybe it's a lost love or the change in the weather or perhaps it's about the need to put a gun to her head and end everything. Her vocals seem to float beneath a sea of static stillness and all the barren piano and violin scrapes don't help matters. When she plays the harmonica, it sounds so bloody sad and you can really imagine her world was crashing down on her. Deliberately sounding as if recorded in some dark basement, "Helder" is only for those that can handle their mood swing. Is Annelies in a dour mood or does she need professional help? You decide.
