Life and Live

[Xeng, www.xeng.org]

First a confession: I'm a Xiu Xiu virgin. I'll admit that right off the bat. Then again, we all must start our journey sometime, right? I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to expect from Xiu Xiu? Noise? Cussing? Honesty? Bleakness? Acoustic alchemy? A little bit of everything? Jamie Stewart [the brain behind this project] protrudes a voice that is very stark, bleak and [as much as I hate to say this] unbearably honest. Right down to his bones, this guy strums a little guitar and bares his soul for the world to agonize over. Is he really crying on "20,000 Deaths for Eidelyn Gozales, 20,000 Deaths for Jamie Peterson"? That's definitely whistling I hear in there and the voice of someone in a great deal of pain and anguish. Remember Daniel Johnston? Jamie exhibits that same stark, brutal and even naďve honesty. Whether it's frustration, anger, a glum flicker of hope he's analyzing, it's all real, with a capital R. I can't imagine anyone finding anything artificial or plastic here. Not even for a second did I believe he's putting on a show with this act. For those who haven't heard lo-fi before, this will take some getting used to. There are too many great moments to mention, but when Jamie abruptly announces in the midst of "I Broke Up" that "this is the worst vacation ever!" and that he's going to hit someone with a big shingle, you know he's speaking his mind. How can he go wrong when the brutal honesty of the music comes shining through and through. Let some sunshine into your life. Seek "Life and Live" before the big conglomerates get inside your head.
