KEVIN AYERS
The BBC Sessions 1970 - 1976

Vocalist/troubadour Kevin Ayers has always seemed like a lost soul - like someone who enjoys being away from the spotlight. Considering his reclusiveness, it's rather odd to see there are two CDs worth of BBC Sessions in their vaults. This collection represents material taken from eight such sessions recorded at the peak of Ayer's musical journey, between 1970 and 1976. People have compared Ayers to Syd Barrett, though I feel this comparison is rather uncalled for. While Barrett enjoyed being a hermit, Ayer was much more cheery and he always surrounded himself with people from various musical shifts. The personal highlights here include four 1970 tracks recorded with Soft Machine members. Especially convincing is "Why Are We Sleeping", with Robert Wyatt on fronting vocals, Lol Coxhill on soprano, Elton Dean on alto along with a slew of others. Infamous "We Did It Again / Murder in the Air" is a wholly satisfying jam of enormous proportions. In fact, it's the colourful imagery inside of the longer pieces that were Ayers' strength. Listen as he lovingly intones "Who will you dream of tonight Lady Rachel?" on "Lady Rachel". Is he evoking aural imagery from medieval times or is he simply from another world far away and long ago? "Whatevershebringswesing" is a jovial carousel tune of the highest order. True, some of the tapes are not exactly of the highest quality but you have to remember, these recordings collected dust at BBC headquarters for three decades. Long forgotten, music from Kevin Ayers' most crucial time period is finally resurrected for future generations.
