OREN MARSHALL
Introduction to the Story of Spedy Sponda, Part One: In a Silent Room
[Slowfoot Records, www.slowfoot.co.uk]

Tuba player Oren Marshall was once asked to describe his sound. He came up with "a contemporary classical ambient space heavy metal experimental improvised folk blues". To be fair, he wasn't merely touting his own horn. His sound is all encompassing. Having played with everyone from Ghana Dance Ensemble, Myra Melford, Franz Hautzinger, Pan African Orchestra to the Canadian Ballet gives him a ton of bragging rights. Forget about Oren's total mastery of the tuba. What's crucial is what he actually comes up off the top of his head once he's improvising the pieces. The new solo recording features not only solo tuba sounds, but is heavy in the electronics department as well. Oren is amazing at taking full advantage of the room; for playing the space as it were. Check out the echoes on the fourth part of the suite, as his horn reverberates clearly in the distance, each time making for an impression of a call for help between two huge mountain peaks. Earlier on in the same piece, he stumbles on heavy reverb that resembles a guitar-heavy machination. One of the most adventurous pieces on the record is the fifth [also untitled] part, where five tubas are played by Oren simultaneously. Four of the tubas are connected to the "main" tuba in the player's hands and by a set of meticulously prepared plastic tubing. All five tubas are set in a circle around the audience facing inwards. The sound is phenomenal as each sound is closely miked at close range to produce an orchestral feeling. Part two features another example of Oren the multi-tasker. While he's playing a pleasantly constructed tuba crescendo, an electric guitarist from hell [actually a sample of a guitar] joins in to do a "virtual" duo. Carefully constructed and gorgeously realized, "Introduction to the Story of Spedy Sponda" is a work that has no equals in the world of solo playing today.
