MICHAEL McGOLDRICK
Wired

[Vertical Records, www.verticalrecords.co.uk]

Celtic music has somehow passed me by. Through my exploration of various world musics, I concentrated on indigenous music from Africa, Far East, India, Middle East, South America but I've never been too big on what was happening in Europe. Maybe this is about to change?
Flautist, whistler and uillean pipe player Michael McGoldrick's new release "Wired" is a dazzling display of how traditional elements can be blended with more modern ingredients. Born in Manchester to Irish parents, Michael McGoldrick has been playing whistles and flute since a tender age. Along the way, he has collected every imaginable award that was for the taking. He's even recorded a parody of Oasis's "Morning Glory", which he named after his son "Morning Rory". He even played himself on "Coronation Street". This album sees him in full-fledged glory as he plays high spirited pipes and flutes throughout. Parvinder Bharat provides some fine tabla work, Manus Lurny plays some spirited bouzouki, while John McCusker plays quite uplifting fiddle all over the place. The music really grooves and swings. Take note, this isn't Celtic music of days past. This is something of the here and now. Personal stand out track is "Sophie's" - a spiritual chant called Maani [recorded in Bangladesh] - which features breath-taking vocals of Meena. This music works on many levels but most important one is the fact that it has all the elements to make it "popular". You've got a rhythm section. You've got swing and intense action. You've got a tight band that rocks out. Whether you enjoy the album in a pub or in the comfort of your home, you're bound to be rewarded with the same wealth of warmth. Just thinking about "Wired", I get visions of Celtic dancing orgies. Who said world music couldn't cross boundaries and be accepted by the masses?
