MICHEL DONEDA
Solo Las Planques

[Sillon, www.sofamusic.no/sillon]

French soprano saxophonist Michel Doneda has amassed an impressive discography. Having worked with players such as Dominique Regef, Lę Quan Ninh, Louis Sclavis, Tetsu Saitoh, Barre Philipps, Beńat Achiary, Marcel Papaux, Gérald Zbinden, Günter Müller, Jack Wright, Tatsuya Nakatani, Alessandro Bosetti and countless others gives him full privileges to say he's truly a player not afraid to tackle any collaborative effort. These two releases, however, see him tackling his saxophone solo.
Though not a solo album in its entirety, [Dominique Regef plays hurdy gurdy and israj on two of the eight tracks] "L'Élémentaire Sonore" [recorded back in 1991] nonetheless is a calling card for those who are not familiar with the Doneda sound. Lyrical but with a punch, lovely but only to a point, dangerous but devoid of any claws, his work on the soprano is stunningly varied. Ranging from the lyrical overdrive and chaos on "Discours Conique" through to the soft, underplayed belly of "La Chevelure", Doneda strikes a chord of unsettling storm. From track to track, the variety is striking. When Regef joins in on a couple of tracks, his hurdy gurdy only adds further colouring and schematic variations to what is already an overflowing palette. If there ever was an essential place to start your exploration of Michel Doneda's music, "L'Élémentaire Sonore" would be a definite first stop.
Thirteen years have passed since the previous solo record, so it's no wonder that Michel Doneda's playing has changed, not just somewhat, but radically. He has in fact taken the route that so many other players have chosen and is playing almost entirely minimal, vibration music. In fact, it sounds like his playing has been frozen in time and place. While all around him is moving, his playing is austere, severely slow and rather pulsating. Much of his solos sound like pure wind, while another portion resemble a delicate whistle sound or a car revving up. "Solo Las Planques" is more about the textures than actual solos. It's the fine-tuned breaths that make all the difference. A fine debut release for the Norwegian Sillon label [run by Ingar Zach]. Just a word of warning, if you want to grab this CD, you'd better make up your mind real fast as it comes in a limited edition run of a mere 500 copies.
