STEVE LEHMAN
Demian as Posthuman

[Pi Recordings, www.pirecordings.com]

Saxophonist and composer Steve Lehman's debut for Pi Recordings "Demian as Posthuman" is a mish-mash of styles and influences. First of all, there is no linear pattern to follow on the record. Much of the thematic scheme concerns itself with heavily programmed drum machines, effects and electronics. Jahi Lake lays down some nicely layered turntable patterns on "Logic - Meshell". Meshell Ndegeocello plays some funky bass on that same track, along with some down dirty licks on perhaps the album's funkiest cut "Community". Pianist Vijay Iyer [whom Lehman plays with in his band Fieldwork] lays down some chopped-up piano bits and pieces on the album's opener "Vapors". Tyshawn Sorey's mid-tempo percussion work is heard on about half of the record. Ultimately though, this seems to be the brain child of Lehman himself. While he likes to over-blow his alto and sopranino, it's actually more slow and mid-tempo pacing that he favours on his compositions. While electronic and even hip-hop elements are well conceived, in many instances they simply take away from live band angularity that could have been amazing. Then again, I think this was precisely at the forefront of Lehman's mind when conceiving this record. This is a heavily re-touched studio record, where ingenuity takes precedence over improvisation. Ultimately, what we get is atmospheric jazz with a tinge of an eerie, spooked-out feeling and a hint of funk which is executed with expert precision and played with sensitivity and buzzing warmth. "Demian as Posthuman" is not some sort of an abstract novelty but a real treat.
