CARL CRAIG
Fabric25

The folks at Fabric Club in London do it again. While these two releases may not be the cream of the crop, both have plenty of highlights to offer.
The Herbaliser not surprisingly goes for the heavy-rhyming mode right off the bat. Opening with the loud'n'nasty reverb of Milion Dan's "Dogz N Sledgez" and moving on into the smooth rhyming of J-Sands of the Lone Catalysts "Southern Lady", the compilation is off to a good start. Later on, a killer Coldcut remix of Eric B & Rakim's "Paid in Full" makes itself be known in the mix. The main beef with the mix is the sameness on much of the tracks. Too much heavy and speed-rhyming just makes my head spin. A bit more variety would have been nice. The penultimate moment arrives in the form of Jackson 5's "It's Great to Be Here". Hearing Michael Jackson's voice during his glory days sends chills up and down my spine. A great way to infuse some much needed variety into this mix.
Carl Craig takes a more laid back approach to his mix on "Fabric 25". Beats are fresh, the rhythms are smooth and the jumbled mess of tracks he spins on the record are all best friends. Gears get shifted many times during the 70 minute plus mix, often times swerving into many directions all at once. Touches of break-beat, pieces of disco, down-right dirty pumping bass and touches of ambient all seem to work quite well. From the funky side of Rayon's "The Panther (Rubber Re-edit)" to retro sounds of D'Malicious' "Alive" and the effectively minimal beats of Just One's "Love2Love", this mix really has it all. In fact, the last few tracks get into an almost ambient mode. Full of warm and fuzzy, organic soft beats, they ensure you're well rested for your next rave. Another head-thumping production from the people at Fabric.
