FREDERIC LE JUNTER
Chansons Impopulaires

[In Poly Sons, www.inpolysons.free.fr]

Frédéric Le Junter is a French musician who has been constructing his own instruments for the last two decades. Not only does he construct instruments - ranging from various guitars, basses to electronic devices - but he also puts together installations that feature his instruments in full force. In fact, beside electronic devices, Le Junter also builds intricate mechanical music machines that he conditions to play along with him [or against him]. These monstrous creations are heavily featured on his latest solo recording "Chansons Impopulaires". Not unlike Pierre Bastien [who uses machines and home-made toys in his installations], Le Junter is a fan of the twisted, unique and the bizarre. Not surprising then that his music takes perverse little turns and gives us the runaround the musical map of genres. This isn't pop music [too difficult on the ears and you can't really find the chorus]. It can't be experimental music [there's too much melody and lightheartedness]. It can't be jazz [no wind instruments and only one guy conducting the whole orchestra]. So, what is it then? This is a solo project, where Le Junter stands with an electric guitar in front of a rather large table, filled with his home-made objects. Some pieces are frightful out-there stuff. Le Junter is strumming on his home-made guitar-like instrument, while he's setting into motion his self- constructed drum-machine [though it sounds much more organic]. On "Le Fit" [one of the few instrumentals], he sets into motion his entire orchestra. Instruments that sound like racing cars, others that resemble some sort of an ancient lute, and others that sound like sheets of scrap metal all compete for the race to the finish. Slowly, the piece draws to a close, with sounds of a dying muffler being put to its grave, while you're left with this weird taste in your ears. Le Junter's voice is a strange concoction of indifference and subtle anger all in one. Two videos are included on the CD to give you a glimpse of Le Junter's funky home-made instrumentation. Does his music always gel? Not necessarily. Does it amuse and bewilder? Always!
