I am the Resurrection: A Tribute to John Fahey

[Vanguard Records, www.vanguardrecords.com]

Guitarist John Fahey somehow managed to keep his music just under the radar screens of the unsuspecting public. Too bluesy to be a rock musician and too brave to be considered anything else, he kept pushing his distinct musical styling until his death in 2001. Set up during the mid 90's, his Revenant imprint preserved a slew of crucial, long-forgotten and undocumented blues [along with improvised and new music]. While tribute albums are key ways of saying goodbye to someone who was a musical comrade, they can also hold an uneven, mixed bag of tricks up their sleeves. Luckily, while the most recent John Fahey tribute "I am the Resurrection" is not uneven, it certainly does hold a wide variety of genres up its sleeve. Other than prevalent finger-picking throughout the disc [Fahey was surely a heavy finger-picker], there is a ton of surprising turns and twists. Devandra Banhart's soothing, heavily meditative treatment on "Sligo River Blues" is certainly a welcome treat. An odd though a refreshing take is one that Howe Gelb serves up on "My Grandfather's Clock". Full of playful, be-bop piano and lo-fi recording techniques, the piece truly takes us back in time to the beginning of last century. Oddly enough, this is the only piece that doesn't feature a guitar at its core. A rich, guitar-thick folk rearrangement of "Sunflower River Blues" is nicely redone by Pelt, while M. Ward rocks out in a hard-blues fashion on "Bean Vine Blues # 2". One of the most welcome pieces is Sufjan Stevens' take on "Variation on 'Commemorative Transfiguration & Communion at Magruder Park'". Orchestral in its scope, but very earthy, the piece has an overall majestic feel to it. The most experimental treatment in the bunch [though the one that's most predictable] is Lee Ranaldo's take on "The Singing Bridge of Memphis, Brooklyn Bridge Version: The Coelcanth". Music concrete, with a few guitar licks and some nicely reverberating feedback along the way just doesn't do the track justice. The album maybe a mixed bag, but at every step of the way, it gives us the many different facets of the legend and the man that was John Fahey.
