BOBBY BARE
The Moon Was Blue

[Dualtone, www.dualtone.com]

Twenty two year hiatus for country legend Bobby Bare is an incredibly long time. If you take into consideration the trends that have come and gone since then, you realize 22 years is a lifetime and then some. It was actually his son, Bobby Bare Jr., who coaxed the great crooner to finally enter the studio. What a miracle this is. "The Moon Was Blue" is one of these great comeback albums that everyone talks about recording but then, when they get around to it, they ultimately mess things up. Entire record is orchestral in scope. Great choruses that lift the spirits are heard throughout as are terrific string sections that move the proceedings to another level. Bare's vocals retain that same melancholy crooner spirit. Both sad and strangely uplifting at the same time, the man has not lost his touch. Though much of the album is filled with classic country sounds, there are exceptions to this rule. Check out the great blues quality to "Everybody's Talkin'". In fact, the song could pass for a great top 40 hit, if it wasn't too real for the bullshit the record industry feeds the airwaves. Otherwise - "It's All in The Game", "I am an Island", "Love Letters in the Sand" - the songs touch on long lost love, past regrets, dire mistakes, shattering emotional stains and the blues. Bobby Bare is truly a treasure that we can't allow to fade away into obscurity. That voice will get you every time. I can't remember last time I was moved by a country record this much since kd lang's "Shadowland" almost two decades ago. Welcome back Bobby Bare. This time, please stay a while!
