BORIS
Pink

[Southern Lord, www.southernlord.com]

Japanese power trio Boris have been going strong now for the past decade. They unleash their latest mayhem with "Pink" - a tight package of eleven blow'em up tunes that are bound to make your head spin. Within seconds of putting the CD into the player, I was already revved up. These guys can really rock, I thought to myself. This isn't the "childish" sort of metal-core I remembered from mid 80's, when Venom still reigned in hell. Sure, the guys can rip them up, along with the best acts, but there's a purpose to all this punch. Vocalist / bassist and guitarist Takeshi, joins guitarist Wata and percussionist Atsuo on a trip that is as hard, demanding as it is rewarding. Don't be scared though, for this isn't pure metal in any sense or form. "Afterburner" for instance has heavy blues licks and a tambourine beat that could've come from an early Donovan record. With its fuzzy, overblown guitars, "Six, Three Times" could be a My Bloody Valentine tribute, while the drone-heavy, mud-sliding "Blackout" just may be a nod to SunnO))), with whom Boris will be collaborating in the near future [can't wait to hear the ultra-dire results of that one!]. Did I mention Takeshi's vocals seem to be buried beneath a thick, sturdy wall of noisy guitar soup. To my discerning ears, the cream of the crop is the album's closing 18 minute piece "Just Abandoned My-Self". Through its span, it revolves like a slowly spinning satellite falling slowly to earth, dying a slow death. A true definition of grind-core! Ultimately, Boris save us from the mundane, the normal and the conforming. Who said metal held no variety?
